Be comprehensive. Include pre-trip fees and purchases (passport renewals, visas, clothing, luggage); long-distance and local transportation; hotel (including all taxes); meals; entertainment; activities; gratuities; cell phone/long-distance calls; photography expenses. Also factor any in-destination shopping you may do (whether for local specialties or essential sundries) into your estimate. And after you’ve done this, add another 2%–5%—depending on how thrifty you are—to get a figure closer to what you’ll probably spend.
