This might not be such a big surprise, but many destinations, even in big cities where there are lots of choices, have tourist traps where the food is mediocre (or worse) and the prices are unreasonably high.
There’s a reason New Yorkers don’t usually eat in Times Square, for example. You’ll almost always have a better meal—and at a price that’s right—when you eat where the locals do. If you can’t land a local newspaper or travel guide, ask the hotel staff where they’d go for a special meal, or seafood, or a cheap meal, or the like.
