Costa Cruises Statement on Costa Concordia

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (Jan. 15, 2012, 4:30 p.m. ET) -- We at Costa Cruises are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected.

Over the past 48 hours, more than 1,100 Costa employees have been working tirelessly in the wake of this terrible event. We are working closely with the authorities to support ongoing search-and-rescue operations, and are focusing on ensuring that all guests and crewmembers return home safely.

Our immediate priority is to account for all passengers and crew, and to secure the vessel to ensure that there are no environmental impacts. We have engaged the services of a top specialized salvage company to develop an action plan and help establish a protection perimeter around the ship. It should be noted that the Prosecutor has seized the ship and the DVR -- the so-called “black box” containing all navigation data -- and the vessel can be accessed by Costa only with permission from the authorities.

We are working with investigators to find out precisely what went wrong aboard the Costa Concordia. While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship’s master, Captain Francesco Schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences. The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and in handling the emergency the captain appears not to have followed standard Costa procedures. We are aware that the lead Prosecutor has leveled serious accusations against the ship’s captain, who joined Costa Crociere in 2002 as a safety officer and was appointed captain in 2006.

In light of these accusations and the continuing investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time.

As we are learning more about the event and the evacuation, however, it is becoming clear that the crew of the Costa Concordia acted bravely and swiftly to help evacuate more than 4,000 individuals during a very challenging situation. We are very grateful for all they have done.

Background on Costa’s Commitment to Safety
Costa complies very strictly with all safety regulations and our personnel are committed, first and foremost, to guest safety and security.

All crewmembers hold a BST (Basic Safety Training) certificate and are trained and prepared in emergency management and to assist passengers abandoning the ship with numerous drills. Roles, responsibilities and duties are clearly assigned to all crewmembers. Every two weeks all crewmembers perform a ship evacuation simulation. A lifeboat and evacuation drill for all guests is conducted within 24 hours of embarking, as required by law. Costa has a computerized system that ensures all passengers undergo this drill.

The skills of Costa crew are periodically tested by Coast Guard authorities and an independent classification organization, per SMS (Safety Management Systems) requirements.

There are lifeboats and jackets on board in excess of the number required for all passengers and crew. Lifeboats are equipped with food and water supplies, first-aid kits and communication and signaling equipment. All life-saving appliances meet international standards and are subject to close, regular inspection by shipboard personnel and certification authorities. All Costa ships are certified by RINA and have been built to the highest standards and technologies.

Liner Captain Is Questioned in Capsizing Off Italy Coast

GIGLIO, Italy — The captain of the cruise ship that capsized aground near an Italian island, killing at least five people, may have caused the accident by taking the ship too close to the island’s rocky shore, the owner of the vessel said on Sunday, as rescue workers extracted three survivors and two bodies from the wreck.

The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, was arrested on Saturday.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, 52, of Naples, Italy, was detained for questioning by the Italian police on charges of manslaughter, failure to offer assistance and abandonment of the ship.

On Sunday, Costa Cruises, the ship’s owner, issued a statement saying that “there may have been significant human error” by Captain Schettino that caused the ship, the Costa Concordia, to ground on a rocky outcropping near this resort island on Friday.

“The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and in handling the emergency, the captain appears not to have followed standard Costa procedures,” the statement said.

The statement appeared to diverge from the company’s comments on Saturday when it said that the Costa Concordia had followed the normal course it follows “52 times a year.” The company had also commended Captain Schettino, saying he “immediately understood the severity of the situation” and “initiated security procedures to prepare for an eventual ship evacuation.”

Before he was detained by the authorities, Captain Schettino told Italian television that the ship hit a reef that was not on its navigation charts.

About 70 people were injured when the ship capsized, just as a late-seating dinner had begun on Friday night.
Accounts from survivors and witnesses raised questions about whether the ship had veered off course and suggested that the crew was ill-prepared for an emergency.

With 17 of the ship’s 4,200 passengers still listed as missing, rescue workers searched the waterlogged luxury liner on Sunday for survivors and found three, including a couple on their honeymoon. The couple was found inside a cabin, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the Italian fire brigade that rescued them.

Later, firefighters rescued the ship’s purser by helicopter, hoisting him strapped to a stretcher. The purser, Manrico Giampedroni, 57, from the northwestern region of Liguria, had a broken leg.

Divers searching submerged cabins found the bodies of two elderly men, one from Spain and one from Italy, both wearing life jackets, said Cmdr. Cosimo Nicastro, a coast guard spokesman. The deaths brought the number of people confirmed dead to five.

Among the people still missing were 11 passengers and 6 crew members, said Enrico Rossi, president of the Tuscany region. The United States State Department said Sunday that 120 Americans had been on board and all but 2 had been accounted for.

Through the day, Italian fire brigades circled the massive ship, which lay on its side like a beached whale, with a wide gash just below the waterline and a rock jutting through its hull. The firefighters tapped the hull and listened for any responses from people trapped inside.

Rescuers were focusing their efforts on the part of the ship still above water. “The likelihood that we can find somebody alive in the underwater cabins is very low, so we are aiming at the ones possibly trapped above water,” said Mr. Cari, the fire spokesman.

So far, his crews had searched only a quarter of that area, parts of which are blocked by debris. He said the sunken portion of the ship would be inspected through the porthole windows during the night by divers with flashlights.

On the tiny island of Giglio, some residents had tended to survivors through the night on Friday, offering hot tea and dry clothes. At Mass on Sunday morning at the Giglio Porto church, a priest placed a life jacket, a rope and a rescue helmet on the altar to honor the dead and missing.

“Giglio will no longer be the same,” said Don Lorenzo, the priest. “Let’s us all pray together now for our souls.”

While the investigation continued, residents, many of whom are sailors, had little doubt about the cause of the accident, saying the captain had tried to thread a narrow passage between the rocks that was too small for the 114,500-ton ship.

“We used to get kind of close to the shore to show off its beauty, to entertain passengers,” said Demetrio Mattera, 75, a former cruise ship sailor here. “But never so close.”

RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico — The Rosewood Mayakoba is a unique resort that offers both intimacy befitting couples on honeymoon, and a setting that caters to families and large groups.

The resort is one of three independently operated properties on the Mayakoba development site, where 1,600 acres of mangroves and lagoons abut several miles white sand beaches between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. (For a slideshow of the property, click here or on the photos.)

The first hotel to open here was the Fairmont in 2006, followed by the Rosewood in 2008 and the Banyan Tree in 2009. The development was designed to respect and preserve the natural setting, and the properties were developed embracing ecologically sound practices.

Such a base was well-suited to the Rosewood brand, which attempts with each of its properties to convey a sense of place with respect to where it is in the world.

The Rosewood Mayakoba’s 128 luxurious suites are built over several islands and a beachfront. The resort is connected by bridges and pathways where golf carts transport guests from the beach to an island spa to two restaurants, a tequila bar with a tapas menu, a game room, and three pools.

Most distances here are also very walkable, and guests can rent bikes for $5 per day.

The resort’s design embraces the Mayan roots of the Yucatan Peninsula; its open-air, check-in area is built with the same stone made famous at nearby archaeological sites, and is designed to resemble a cenote, the groundwater holes fed by the Yucatan’s extensive system of underground rivers that were sacred to Mayans.

The resort’s unique design, on small islands naturally formed in the lagoon’s waterways, allows most guests to check in via boat (only beachfront suites don’t face the lagoons).

The boat delivers the guests to a private dock that leads past the individual plunge pool each suite here has. The suites are actually two-story, private villas, with a modern design that also incorporates local stone and wood materials.

In addition to the plunge pools, each suite has an oversized indoor soaking tub and bathrooms that lead out to a private outdoor shower and a staircase up to a rooftop sunbathing area.

Most suites overlook the lagoon’s waterways and offer a decent degree of privacy from the other docks. The largest accommodations are the 18 overwater suites that float out over the water’s edge where the lagoon widens out.

Near the beach, several suites have both ocean views and a dock leading to the lagoon, while the 18 beachfront suites give guests direct access to the sand.

The resort’s spa, Sense, is situated on its own island surrounding a natural cenote. Twelve stand-alone treatment cabanas are scattered among the trees, making each feel as if it stands alone in the Yucatan jungle.

Spa island has eight suites where guests enjoy their own private treatment rooms, and a no-children environment.

Children are welcome everywhere else at Rosewood, and the property has indeed become popular among families. The beachfront pool is popular with families, and the Rosebuds Children's Program offers a supervised, complimentary kids program, which includes eco-tours on a boat with Rosewood’s full-time biologist who points out turtles, crocodiles and birds on a boat ride through the lagoon and mangroves that teaches the children about conservation.

Rosewood Mayakoba has two restaurants and a tequila bar, Agave Azul that serves antojitos, or small plates with items such as ceviche and empanadas, and hosts informative tequila tastings.

The casual, beachfront eatery Punta Bonita offers creative Mexican cuisine such as lobster tacos and tlayudas, Oaxacan-style “pizza” made with tortillas.

Casa Del Lago is by evening a more upscale, elegant dining experience overlooking the main pool and lagoon, and in the morning the bustling site of the extensive breakfast buffet.

The Rosewood is one of the few European Plan hotels in the region. Last summer, it implemented a meal plan that about 15% of guests purchase, starting at $90 per day for adults and $45 for children.

However, prices have risen slightly from 2011, a positive trend because it demonstrates increased demand, said the agency franchise group.

The survey is based on bookings from Cruise Holidays’ booking system as well as from a supplementary opinion survey taken by top Cruise Holidays owners and agents.

The bookings include any staterooms booked by Cruise Holidays from Jan. 1 to Dec. 21, 2011, for any cruises slated to depart in 2012.

Price is only one factor that contributes to cruisers' vacation decisions. The ship and itinerary are just as important, the survey found.

In this year's findings, Cruise Holidays agents selected the Celebrity Silhouette, which entered service last July, as their favorite ship to debut in the past calendar year.

They voted the fifth and final Solstice-class ship, Celebrity Reflection, as the ship they are most anticipating for 2012. The Celebrity Reflection will debut in the fall.

“Most of our Cruise Holidays owners and agents have sailed aboard the Solstice-class ships since Celebrity's development of the game-changing Solstice in late 2008,” said Mark Schiffner, vice president and chief operating officer of Cruise Holidays. “This class of ship has since become one of the most celebrated in the industry.”

Another finding shows the evolving tastes of cruisers: The second most anticipated ship in 2012 is an upscale river cruise ship, Ama Waterways’ 164-passenger Amacerto.

The Amacerto will enter service in April sailing the Danube, Rhine, Main and Mosel rivers.

Rounding out the top five in the survey of most popular ships for 2012 are the Disney Fantasy, Oceania Cruises’ Riviera and Viking River Cruises’ Freya.

Alaska and Europe continue to battle it out in the destination race, according to the survey. While Caribbean cruises are the perennial and overwhelming favorite, early bookings to Europe continue to outpace those to Alaska for the second year in a row, said Cruise Holidays.

A shift in cruise capacity away from the Mexican Riviera means this region is down to seventh place after being as high as third place in 2006, 2007 and 2008, the survey found.

NCL's Youth Program Getting a Makeover

Norwegian Cruise Line is revamping its children's program with a new curriculum for youngsters up to age 17. The program, currently called Norwegian Kid's Crew, will be renamed.

The cruise line will begin offering structured programming for infants and babies up to 2 years old.

The youth program is being created in partnership with the King’s Foundation and Camps, a U.K.-based organization that develops sports and activity programs for children. More focus will be placed on sporting activities, arts and crafts, theater and technology, the line said.

The Norwegian Gem will be the first in the fleet to introduce the new activities, starting in mid-February. It subsequently will be rolled out across all Norwegian vessels. Neither the implementation timetable nor the name of the new program has been revealed.

“More and more families are choosing a cruise for their vacation since it represents such a good value and offers so much for the entire family. In fact, close to 150,000 children sailed on our ships in 2010 and that number continues to rise,” said Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan. He said the line would invest “millions” in the revamp of the kids' program.

The line also has engaged Cirque Du Jour, a New York-based company that specializes in teaching children circus skills such as juggling, clowning and acrobatics. Circus workshops and shows will be offered for the entire family, said Norwegian.

The line’s current youth program was put in place in 1999.

Cruise Weddings Are Big Business

With thousands of couples tying the knot on cruise ships or during port calls every year, wedding packages are a boon for agents and cruise lines alike.

Retailers booking group space for the happy couples’ family and friends can earn big commissions, while the lines rake in revenue from ceremonies, receptions and other events related to the nuptials.

Carnival Cruise Lines spokesman Vance Gulliksen said that 2,400 weddings are held each year across the line’s fleet, and he added that several enhancements to Carnival’s wedding programs are in the works.

Norwegian Cruise Line typically hosts some 300 weddings each year, according to AnneMarie Matthews, vice president for public relations, who said the line plans to ramp up its marketing of wedding options in 2012.

Royal Caribbean International sells 800 weddings each year, and it also plans to boost marketing efforts.

There is little mystery about why the cruise lines are enthusiastic about at-sea nuptials. Even an arguably low-frills wedding package that Travel Weekly created on paper for a group of 25, based on one line’s amenity choices, totaled nearly $6,000.

Beyond the Big Three, other cruise lines are also getting in on the act. Cunard, eager to make its foray into this lucrative niche, decided earlier this fall to pull the registry of its three ships from England, where a law prohibits marriage ceremonies at sea, and reflag the vessels in Bermuda, where no such law exists.

Cunard President Peter Shanks said the line decided to reflag because it was “missing out on the big business of weddings.” Cunard’s ships will offer wedding packages starting next spring; details about the program are expected before the end of the year.

The vendor strategy
The big mass-market and premium cruise lines outsource their wedding-planning services to specialist vendors. Among the largest providers is the Wedding Experience, a Miami-based company that markets a wide array of wedding packages for most of the major lines. According to Wedding Experience, it is the exclusive vendor to Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian Cruise Line and Azamara Club Cruises.

Other vendors in the weddings market include Royal Ocean Events, which handles all of Holland America Line’s packages; A Wedding for You; and Island Dream Weddings. Carnival Cruise Lines said it uses a combination of vendors, based on the location of the wedding.

There’s no commission for agents on any of the wedding packages. In fact, the purchase of a package is handled separately from the booking of the cruise. In most cases, onboard accommodations for the bridal couple and any guests sailing with them must be booked and deposited before the wedding planning can begin.

And agent Loris Fusco, of Montrose Travel in Montrose, Calif., said that none of the cruise lines will reserve a wedding date until the full cost of the event has been paid for.

Potential pitfalls
Agents who have helped clients book their weddings through a third-party vendor say it can be a mixed blessing.

The great thing about it is that the vendor makes all the arrangements for the nuptials and any reception or party afterward. The risky thing about it is that the vendor makes all the arrangements for the nuptials and any reception or party afterward.

In other words, the agent typically has no control over the actual events, whether they are being held shoreside during a port call or on a ship, and that can be frustrating if anything goes wrong.

“There can be problems when you turn the show over to someone else,” Fusco said. “The Wedding Experience is easy to work with in many respects. They know what they’re doing, but they’re cookie-cutter. If it’s in the package, it’s in the package. The bigger problem for the bride, and the agent, is having no control once the couple gets on the ship.”

Each ship has an onboard staff coordinator who serves as liaison to the bridal couple, attending to the details of the event and troubleshooting potential problems. But even the coordinator can sometimes disappoint.

“Whoever that designated staff person is could drop the ball on your bride,” said Fusco, who books about four cruise weddings each year.

In addition to the cruise line’s coordinator, the wedding vendor typically provides a representative who boards the ship if a wedding is being held on embarkation day, or who attends a shoreside ceremony.

According to Valerie Brizuela Mahon, marketing director for the Wedding Experience, the majority of shipboard weddings are held on embarkation day because the cruise lines allow nonsailing wedding guests to board the ship for a few hours.

A package deal
Wedding packages can offer a mind-boggling array of amenities (from menu and drink options to music, photographers and flowers) and add-on events (such as Celebrity Cruises’ optional Bridesmaids’ Party or Cigar and Cognac Party). That’s why it’s crucial to thoroughly qualify clients before making any recommendations about which cruise line, cruise ship or package the couple should consider.

A typical basic package onboard a ship will include the officiant (in some cases the ship’s captain), a bouquet for the bride and boutonniere for the groom, a photographer (for one hour), cake and champagne for two and perhaps flowers in the stateroom.

Then come the optional add-ons: a bigger cake, more champagne, a cocktail party, a buffet dinner, a sit-down dinner and myriad other items.

Obviously, if you have guests you must provide more cake and champagne. And usually the bride and groom will buy a sit-down luncheon or dinner. Pricing depends on the cruise line and the number of people.

A review of each line’s offerings reveals that shoreside weddings, either on a beach or at another scenic venue, typically incur extra charges. In addition to group transportation, each destination charges marriage license fees, which can add hundreds of dollars to the tab.

For instance, on St. Maarten the license costs $685. On St. Kitts it’s $395, and on Aruba it costs $300.

Not all cruise lines offer wedding packages. Smaller lines, such as Windstar, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas, don’t get into the weddings market, but they do sell vow-renewal ceremonies directly to their guests. Windstar, for example, features a package that covers a ceremony by the ship’s captain, a cake, a bottle of wine and a renewal certificate. The package costs $179.

The Wedding Experience was launched in 2000 by managing director Barbara Whitehill, who started out in the business by arranging weddings for just one cruise line.

“She soon realized that her vast network of vendors throughout the world would be beneficial for every cruise line couple,” Mahon said.

Today the firm handles about 4,000 weddings a year. Mahon said it had reached a peak of 6,000 before the recession.

“With the [economic downturn] we took a little bit of a hit,” she said. “People stopped taking vacations, spending went down. Our business dipped in 2008 and 2009, but now it has leveled off.” She added that she expects demand to ramp up again as the economy improves.

Three of the company’s cruise line clients offer weddings at sea performed by the ship’s captain: Azamara Club Cruises, Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises.

“This is due to where their ships are flagged,” Mahon said. “Princess is flagged Bermudian, while Azamara and Celebrity are flagged in Malta. The other lines we handle are flagged Bahamian, whose government does not allow the captain to marry couples.”

American Airlines Files for Bankruptcy

American Airlines, one of the few major U.S. airlines to avoid bankruptcy, finally succumbed Tuesday and filed for chapter 11.

Corporate parent AMR also filed, and said that American, American Eagle and all other subsidiaries will honor all tickets and reservations and operate normal flight schedules during the bankruptcy filing process, using its $4.1 billion in cash.

The airline also announced that Gerard Arpey, its chairman and CEO, is retiring. He is being succeeded by Thomas Horton, who was named president of the company in July 2010.

In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest Tuesday after the filing, Horton insisted that American customers should see "business as usual" in spite of the bankruptcy. But he said that the cost disadvantage for American compared to other major U.S. carriers that have already gone though bankruptcies of their own since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks left it no choice.

"Folks at American have worked very hard and honorably to avoid that path over the last decade, but it became clear that gap had become too wide now, it had become untenable, and it was time to turn the page," he said.

Before Tuesday's filing, American and Southwest (LUV, Fortune 500) were the only major U.S. airlines that had not filed for bankruptcy reorganization.

American has been widely seen as the weakest of the major airlines for some time now. It has reported a profit in only one quarter since 2007, and it lost $4.8 billion over those 3-1/2 years. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect its losses to continue through at least 2012.

Still the company officials had been insisting that it was not looking at bankruptcy.

American Airlines' spending spree

As recently as last month, company spokesman Andy Backover, responding to questions about a possible bankruptcy, said "Regarding rumors and speculation about a court-supervised restructuring, that is certainly not our goal or our preference. We know we need to improve our results, and we are keenly focused as we work to achieve that."

On Tuesday, Horton told CNN that bankruptcy "never has been a goal or preference." He said that American faced an $800-million-a-year cost disadvantage compared to the labor deals at its competitors. But he said efforts to renegoiate both its labor contract and its debt structure had proved unsuccessful.

"Clearly it was our preference to do this in consensual fashion," he said. "Unfortunately, we were not successful in that regard." American will now gain significantly greater leverage in those talks given the bankruptcy court's power to void contracts.

The airline announced a massive order for 460 jets from Boeing (BA, Fortune 500) and Airbus in July in an effort to modernize its fleet. Horton said American intends to move ahead with that purchase and keep the financing package for the planes in place.

American was the world's largest air carrier as recently as 2006. But mergers have dropped it to third in terms of miles flown by paying passengers, behind United Continental (UAL, Fortune 500) and Delta Air Lines (DAL, Fortune 500).

The airline said that its cash reserves, coupled with the cash from ongoing ticket sales, should give it the funds it needs during reorganization, and that it will therefore not need what is known as a "debtor-in-possession" loan that bankrupt companies typically use to operate under Chapter 11.

Shares of AMR (AMR, Fortune 500) were not trading Tuesday. Share had already plunged nearly 80% since the start of the year through Monday's close, and they tumbled another 63% to 60 cents a share in pre-market trading before the halt. Shareholders are typically wiped out during the bankruptcy process.

New Security Improvements for Holiday Travel

Here are some new security improvements for Holiday Travel as reported by the Transportation Security Administration.

• Expedited Screening Pilot: This pilot program prescreens individuals - traveling on Delta Air Lines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County airports and on American Airlines at Miami International and Dallas/Fort Worth International airports - who volunteer information about themselves prior to flying in order to potentially expedite the screening experience. TSA plans to expand this program to McCarran International, Minneapolis St. Paul International and Los Angeles International airports in the coming months.

• New Screening Procedures for Passengers 12 and Under: TSA has implemented new procedures that reduce, though not eliminate, pat-downs of passengers 12 and under that would otherwise have been conducted to resolve alarms while also ensuring effective security measures. Passengers 12 and under are also able to leave their shoes on when going through security checkpoints.

• New Privacy Protection Software on All Millimeter Wave Machines: TSA has upgraded all millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) units at airports nationwide with new software to further enhance privacy protections by eliminating the image of an actual passenger and replacing it with a generic outline of a person. This technology increases the efficiency of the screening process, is safe for all travelers, and passengers are now able to view the same outline that the TSA officer sees.

• Known Crewmember: TSA has designed a new program to expedite screening for airline pilots through positive identification verification, which is currently being tested at Seattle-Tacoma International, Minneapolis-St. Paul International, Chicago O’Hare International, Miami International and Washington Dulles International airports.

• Expanded Behavior Detection Pilot: At Boston Logan International and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County airports, Behavior Detection Officers have casual conversations with travelers to determine if the traveler should be referred for additional screening at the checkpoint.

TSA Holiday Travel Tips

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reminds travelers to be vigilant during the holiday travel season by reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement. The traveling public plays an important role in security, so “If You See Something, Say Something.”

Here are some other tips from the TSA.

• Travelers should remember the three simple steps to security: have ID’s out, coats and shoes off, and laptops and 311 bags out for screening. TSA reminds travelers to follow 3–1–1 for carry-on luggage for non-exempt liquids: 3 ounce bottle or less for all liquids, gels and aerosols; placed in a 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag to hold all small bottles; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. The limitations on liquids apply only to carry-on bags and larger quantities may be packed in checked baggage.

• TSA also recommends that passengers do not travel with wrapped packages. In order to determine if the contents of a package are a threat, a security officer may need to unwrap and inspect the item. Snow globes of any size are not permitted in carry-on bags because officers cannot accurately determine the volume of liquid. TSA recommends passengers pack these items securely in checked baggage.

• Food items such as pies and cakes are permitted but may require further inspection. If travelers are not sure if a food item is considered a liquid or gel it is best to pack the item in checked baggage or ship it to a destination in advance.

No Snow Globes in Carry-On Bags!

Travelers beware! Snow globes of any size are not permitted in carry-on bags, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says, because officers cannot accurately determine the volume of liquid. TSA recommends passengers pack these items securely in checked baggage and recommends that passengers do not travel with wrapped packages. In order to determine if the contents of a package are a threat, a security officer may need to unwrap and inspect the item, TSA says.

The TSA's rules are part of the highlighted security procedures offered ahead of the busy holiday travel period. TSA wants to remind travelers about the steps they can take to be prepared for airport security.

Over the past few months, TSA reports, it has implemented a number of new risk-based security measures, including expedited prescreening initiatives for known travelers and airline crewmembers and modified procedures for screening passengers 12 and under, among other changes.

“TSA has implemented risk-based procedures to further strengthen security while improving the passenger experience whenever possible,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole. “We are prepared this holiday season to keep passengers safe as they travel to see their loved ones.”

Passengers who are prepared for security screening at the checkpoint will help streamline the process for themselves and for other travelers, TSA says.

Americans more confident they will vacation this year

A recent survey indicates that holiday travel spending will jump 10% this year.

The Access America Vacation Confidence Index, found that nearly six in ten Americans (57%) are confident they will take a holiday trip this year, up from 50% in 2010.

That increase will translate into nearly $6 billion more travel spending, pushing total holiday travel spending to $65.2 billion this year, 10% more than in 2010, the survey found.

Each traveler intends to spend $980 on average, down slightly from $1,040 budgeted last year.

Most holiday travelers (56%) will drive, but more travelers plan to fly this year than they have since 2009. Thirty-four percent plan to travel by airplane this year, up from 26% last year and 27% in 2009.

More Americans planned to book early this year, with 49% intending to book their travel at least two months in advance, up from 42% in 2010.

Men are more likely than women to wait until the last minute to book holiday travel, with 32% saying they plan to book within a month of their departure, compared to 21% of women.

The increase in Americans planning to travel during the holiday brings down the vacation deficit index, a number reached by gauging the proportion of Americans who say a vacation is important to them but aren’t confident about taking one.

This holiday season, the deficit is down to 21% from 32% last year.

An A&K spokeswoman said the operator has found multi-generational travel – with grandparents bringing their kids and grandkids – is now twice as likely to sell as other inquiries.

Oceania cruises Launches first-ever theme cruises for 2012

Miami, October 17, 2011 – New for 2012, Oceania Cruises will offer theme cruises for the first time. The new “Signature Sailings” are comprised of 10 voyages exploring culinary, wine, music and health & wellness themes. Guests will enjoy seminars, hands-on classes, concerts, wine tastings and more. Depending on the voyage, Chef Jacques Pépin, up-and-coming jazz musicians, and noted editors will be special guests.

“We are delighted to introduce theme cruises for 2012,” said Bruce J. Himelstein, the line’s president. “While groups that share the same interests have regularly sailed with Oceania Cruises in the past, our new ‘Signature Sailings’ create a special opportunity for guests to experience the cruise in the company of fellow travelers who share their passion for the theme.”

Carnival's New Travel Partner Toolbox

Responding from feedback from travel sellers, Carnival Cruise Lines recently introduced their new travel agent tools, including print collateral materials, and liberalized its group booking policies. The Travel Partner Toolbox, can be found on http://GoCCL.com.

New Collateral Materials
With electronic brochures being seen as far too limiting, the new hard copy collateral materials are not comprehensive brochures but they do address specific aspects of the sales and booking process.

At-A-Glance
A new sales aid, called Fun-damentals, is a fourfold at-a-glance piece that lists itineraries and ships. It also provides talking points about why a cruise vacation is a better value than a land vacation. Another new sales aid, called Fun-Decks, are a collection of deck plans for each ship designed to be given to customers; agents can ask for as many as they want. Both new collateral tools can be personalized with Agency contact information. These pieces are available at no cost to agents.

Cruise Party In A Box
Also new, is a sales support kit designed to help home-based agents host fun cruise events. The kit includes cocktail napkins, coasters, hibiscus streamers, cocktail parasols, and more. Carnival is asking agents to make a $25 donation to St. Jude’s for each kit they request. Kits can be ordered via the Travel Partner Toolbox.

Group Policies Liberalized
Carnival also made two changes to its group policies, also in response to agent feedback.
First, the line extended to 60 days the window for remitting deposits on blocked group space. Previously agents had to put down the deposits of $25 per person within 30 days of blocking the space. Doubling the deposit window gives group sellers more time to convert their group space into booked groups.
The line also simplified penalty guidelines for large groups. The penalty period for canceling large groups is now 240 days before embarkation, regardless of ship, length of sailing or itinerary.
